We would always say "serge protector"... "I need a serge protector" "Will you go buy a serge protector" etc... The other night we were trying to set my work station at home and I said "Andy, can you go get a serge protector" He looked at me with a blank stare and said, a what? As I explained what I needed he replied, "Oh you need a plug bar." I said HUH? No, I need a serge protector.
Now then, this may be silly, but what is it called?? We cannot come to an agreement on what to call these nifty little things... Plug bar? or Serge Protector?

My family calls them power strips... so sorry I'm not any help!
And congrats on being a true blue Las Vegan! I got really sad the day I got a Utah license. :)
It's actually called a surge protector! It's named that because it diffuses the amperage that flows through the electrical outlets and converts the voltage to a more acceptable level. Otherwise you would fry your machines. And yes, I have a finance degree..... BTW, I stayed at a Holiday Inn last night...
I agree with Papa Bruce!
I called them power strips!

Plug bar is cute because that's what it looks like, but it's called a surge protector.
I think this is the first time you've known something that Andy didn't! I LOVE THOSE!
We grew up saying plug bar because we had them in every room, I love your dad's explanation.
My family calls them power strips too.
Surge protector, all the way!

We miss you guys.
Power Strips at our house--but I'm not sure that is an official name! I like Leland's thorough answer though.
Power Strip all the way!
Matt just said, "Power Serge" eeeeeeee. wrong. funny boys.
For true clarity on the subject and according to Wikipedia:
"A surge protector is an appliance designed to protect electrical devices from voltage spikes. Surge protectors attempt to regulate the voltage supplied to an electric device by either blocking or shorting to ground voltages above a safe threshold. A power strip is sometimes miscalled a surge protector, but provides no such protection."
Look at Mom quoting Wikipedia... Why would she do that when she has me around? Next thing you'll want to know is the definition of British Thermal Units (BTU's for all of you neophytes out there) and I would be happy to explain that to you as well...
It's a surge protector. Sorry Andy! And your parents are hilarious Jillian!

We vote POWER STRIP!
Best Buy sold me a "serge protector" that cost me a lot more than a "power strip".
