Grocery Cart Debate

I always thought my child would be the well behaved one. And for the most part, he is. But every child has his or her moments? Mine always occur when going to the grocery store. This is a recent thing where Lucas screams because he hates sitting in the cart. Now I literally dread going to the grocery store because of it. Until recently I discovered that if I let him sit in the back part of the cart with a snack he will sit for hours. Ashley and I would like to design a grocery cart where the openings for the child's legs are on the opposite side, because once a child is 1 they want to see what is going on around them.. they don't want to look at mom.

Anyway... this new "trick" of mine has been working wonders until today. Today we walked in to the market, I put Lucas in the cart, and proceeded to enter. That's when this lady stopped me and said,

" You are going to let your child sit there with his dirty shoes touching where everyone else puts their food!"

I literally did not know what to say. So I looked her in the eyes and said, "Uh-huh".

She then stopped in front of me, making it impossible to pass, walked back and got three disinfecting wipes and made me sit and watch her clean the entire cart. I should have said, "We didn't use that cart, so it's probably clean" But I bit my tongue.

I mean really? Am I in the wrong here? Yes, it is probably not sanitary. BUT are grocery carts sanitary? Raw meat sits in the cart and not everyone puts it in a bag. I know there are germs everywhere... I just try and not think about them.

Ok I am off my soap box. Just wondered if I am the crazy one here...

HOW rude. I wouldn't have been half as nice as you. OBVIOUSLY she didn't have any kids.

And for the record, Adi is a terror at the grocery store and I do the very same thing.

(Except that Macey's has ice cream cones...)

That lady needs a hobby. Clearly she has nothing in her life and is a bitter person.

That is ridiculous!! Miles has been having a rough time lately too! Your idea about having the leg holes be on the opposite side is GENIUS!!

Dang woman. I totally agree with you but totally freeze up in these situations.

Are you freaking kidding me? Pardon my French, but what an a-hole. Seriously. Grace always stand/sits in the back part of the cart, I can't even remember the last time she sat in the front part. And you put your food in bags, or they come in boxes, or wrapped in plastic. Does she not want to wash her food before she eats it? Does she lick her cereal boxes before she pours a bowl? How do you think stuff gets to the shelves lady? Also, carts sit outside in cart stalls before they go back in the store.

And I have many a comment about her behavior, since she was making an obvious attempt to make you feel stupid and feel bad. There are only cuss words to describe how I feel about this woman, so I'll hold my tongue.

I'm so sorry Jillian, some people are just evil, pure and total evil.

My blood is boiling right now, can you tell? I can't stand when people are jerks or are rude on purpose.

That is insane. Kara hit the nail on the head and I am cracking up over the "licking the cereal box" comment. Seriously though, I don't think I've ever had food touch a shopping cart. Everything is packaged and the stuff that isn't (melons, bananas) you don't eat the part that touches. That is seriously ridiculous.

Wren sits in the back of the cart now since we have two and she doesn't always want to walk the whole time. People who would criticize this never had a toddler or don't remember what it was like. Either way, they have no compassion. Also, who could look at your beautiful Lucas and comment on ANYTHING besides how adorable he is?? Further proof of this mean woman's insanity.

The other commenters nailed it! I have never for a second thought about the sanitary implications of my toddler sitting in the back of the cart. That is where he sits every time we go to the store.

That lady is crazy! If she had said something about it not being as safe - fine, I would grant her that. But unsanitary? GIVE ME A BREAK! Cuh-razy. Certifiable.

You are an amazing mom and Lucas is so lucky to have someone so in tune with his needs! Love you!

People are crazy. Birds poop on carts sitting in the parking lot. My baby barfs all over the handles when she sits in the front. Kids pick their noses and touch the carts. I mean, seriously, his shoes are like the least of her worries. She was just trying to make herself feel better by putting you down. She is probably not a mother... :)

OH MY GOSH what a psycho! Like grocery carts are sanitary!? Sick. I always let Dan sit in the big basket. That is the WEIRDEST, rudest, worst uninvited parenting advice story I have every heard.
