Mable Anne Coons ~ May 25, 2016 Part 1

I haven't blogged in over a year, but want to record the birth story before I forget all the details of our sweet little Mable!

When I was 36 weeks my OB was concerned about my weight gain, not that necessarily that I was gaining too much, but that week to week wasn't slowing down where typically in the last 6-8 weeks it slows from the second trimester. She asked if I wanted an ultrasound to measure the baby and I of course said YES! Any chance to have an ultrasound and I am all for it.

Then next day I went for an ultrasound where they discovered that baby was breech and very large, measuring at about 7 pounds. I didn't take her size into consideration because I know that ultrasounds are not always completely accurate, but it made me feel better that all the weight I was gaining was going to baby.  It was most disconcerting that baby was breech! Lucas and Jane were such "easy" deliveries that the thought of having to have a c-section was upsetting. We decided to set an appointment with the specialist and schedule a version where they manually turn the baby.

At 37 weeks we were on the way to the hospital for the version and the doctor called to let us know labor and delivery was full and they needed to reschedule us. At that point Andy and I decided to cancel the version and either chance it that baby would turn on her own or we would go through with the c-section. We had done research on the version procedure and not only was it painful, but it wasn't a 100% success rate. That weekend we did crazy upside down push-ups, yoga, and other interesting youtube "tips" on how to turn a breech baby. I'm not sure what actually worked, but on Monday at my 38 week appointment I had an ultrasound and the baby had flipped! I was over the moon AND I was 3 cm dilated.

From 38 weeks to 40 weeks I had contractions on and off, but nothing consistent. My OB wouldn't induce until I as past 40 weeks so I went ahead and scheduled an induction for the 25th, but knowing in my head that I would for sure go into labor on my own before that (haha).

On May 24th we went out for dinner as a family of four for the last time. Since it was my last meal I got to choose, so off to Nordstrom Cafe we went.  We had a good time with Lucas and Jane and we talked about what we should name the baby, since at that point we still didn't have a name. My entire pregnancy Jane insisted that we name the baby "Spy" --we still have no idea where it came from. Lucas was really wanting Penelope, or Penny. Andy and I didn't really love any name and had no idea what we were going to name her.

We put the kids to bed at my parents and tried to get some sleep. I tossed and turned all night wondering what baby was going to look like, how labor was going to go, what we should name her, etc... I was relieved when my alarm went off!
