As a sidenote- when Lucas was 11 months old I made him a PB&J. Within one bite his lips broke out in hives. I gave him some benedryl and decided he had a peanut allergy. Two other times it has happened where he has had peanut butter, and benedryl did the trick.
On this particular night he had a candy called a "Squirrel Nut".Who gives out a candy entitled a "Squirrel Nut" to children? What happened to good ole' fashioned Skittles or M&M's. It is basically a carmel with peanuts in it.
This is the first time Lucas has ever had an actual peanut, and the reaction was much more severe. His hand where he spit out his candy was covered in hives, the hives were on his forehead, chin, cheeks, down his neck, on his chest and he was drooling. I wiped him off and raced to the nearest Urgent Care. I went running in and yelled "HELP!". The doctor came running out, listened to his heart and lungs, picked up the phone and said, "I am calling an ambulance" to which I replied "I can get to the ER faster" So I went running back to my car, strapped in Lucas, and went racing to the ER.
Meanwhile, Lucas thinks this is the funniest thing that has ever happened. He thinks how fast I am driving is funny, he is singing songs and is excited once we get to the ER that he gets to see the fishes. (can you tell he has been a time or two to the hospital?). As soon as I get to the check in counter the nurse sees Lucas' hives and calls for two more nurses. They check all his vitals and fast track us to see the doctor... but before we get called back Lucas starts throwing up EVERYWHERE. It was EVERYWHERE and on EVERYONE.
So we finally get to the back and doctor listens to him. Because his hives were on his chest and he was drooling they gave him an oral steroid to open his airway and benedryl to calm the nerves. We had to stay long enough to get the throwing up to stop and to keep fluids down.
Lucas in his cute hospital gown- Andy called right as Lucas started throwing up and I was frantically screaming Help. At that point he had our neighbor come over and sit with a sleeping Jane and he came rushing to the hospital. He tends to do much better in these type of situations.
Drinking his fluids and playing "Bangby Birds"
Once it was time to leave Lucas was ready to go!
Walking out with dad
Pressing the button.
It was a stressful night... but are so grateful it wasn't any worse. And you best believe not one piece of Peanut infested candy made it into our halloween pumpkin on Halloween Night!
